| Artist Statement |
My objective is to develop
myself into the prototype of the Twenty-First Century Renaissance Man with
accomplishments in the Arts, Science, Business, Athletics, Health and Politics.
I temper my driven nature with the spirit of Zhuang Zi. All my endeavors
have been very influenced by Taoist Internal Arts of Taijiquan and Baguazhang
and the underlying science of Qigong.
When I was first introduced to the
Taoist Internal Arts 27 years ago, I recognized how they represented a
unique method to train the body. As an athlete, I was very good at using
speed and endurance to win. Starting at 10, I pursued swimming seriously
enough to be on NYU's NCAA Varsity Swimming Team. I also taught swimming
including coaching a Town Swim Team that I expanded from 50 kids to over
140 in three years, including one who still competes as a World Class Triathlonist.
While my passion is Baguazhang, my
specialties are using Qigong for Stress Management and the rehabilitation
of injuries using Qigong and Wu Style Taijiquan. My Qigong for Stress Management
Course addresses both the physical (e.g. Back Pain, Repetitive Stress maladies
like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Arthritis, Headaches & Acid Reflex Disease)
and psychological manifestations of stress.
My method of teaching is derived from
the way I learned. I deconstruct each movement into individual beats (e.g.
States) whose change to the next state is described in term of simple actions
like expansion, compression, coil in, coil out and shift weight (e.g. Operators).
I demonstrate actions both for visual and tactile observation. Tactile
observation is important for the students to feel the changes of state
in their own bodies.
I currently teach Qigong, Taijiquan
and Baguazhang at the Wu Tang Physical Culture Association under the tutelage
of Sifu Frank Allen.
For the last decade, I have competed
regularly in tournaments collecting a modest clutch of medals from forms
events. |
